DURING OUR LONDON SHOOT WITH DENIM MUSE ALEXIS FOREMAN, WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK HER ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY, HER TIPS FOR CURATING A WARDROBE, AND HER PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH DENIM.
'I think my advice would be obviously not to overconsume and have too much stuff. I did a drastic thing, which was to eliminate any colour. I wanted to get ready quickly in the morning, but feel really good. So, I stuck to a natural palette, knowing everything I pulled would go with each other. Now I feel like my boys are older, and I have a bit more time to think and explore, and experiment, so I’m introducing colour back in.'
'I think that the main thing is to always be comfortable. And if you are, if you feel good in what you’re wearing, then keep those pieces. If you feel like not great in certain pieces that you try on, it’s a sign you should get rid of them.'
'I think my signature style is quite masculine, actually, with feminine touches like shoes and bags. I like to look quite oversized. Tailoring is really important. I think I’m often in trousers and I like to play with a high-low contrast. The look needs to be casual with something really smart, I would say, which is kind of my signature style. '
'I love living away from London and just dipping in once or twice a week. I feel
like London still feels special, and the quality of life is a lot better than in
Brighton.'
'In terms of my relationship with the fashion industry, I think it’s probably good because I have to weigh up what’s worth coming into London for. That’s kind of protected me. Helps me to feel good when I come in, and that it’s a worthwhile event '
'I was a graphic designer for about 15 years, and towards the end of that, I started doing more and more creative direction and also had a blog. And then Instagram came along, and I found that much easier to post there. I ended up getting a photographer to take some photos, and then I just began taking photos of myself. It sort of picked up that way to the point where I couldn’t really do my job properly, and I had a decision to make.
Do I carry on with my graphic design job, or do I quit it and become a full-time content creator?
And I took the risk, and I quit my job. Then, bit by bit, the work started coming. Brands knew that I was fully committed, and that’s what I did, and it came, and that was 9 years ago.'
'I actually have a lot of denim, but most of it is white jeans, and I do love a good blue wash. And today's shoot has shown me that actually, I really do love denim. So, I’m integrating a bit more blue in.'
ALEXIS'S TIPS ON STYLING DENIM
'I’ll start with classic jeans with a
sock and a loafer. Or I go for an oversized silhouette with a really nice pointy mule. I like to use denim with smarter items; I tend not to use it casually. Probably more of my dressed-up looks involve denim. '
'I went through phases of being very neutral. And that was a decision that, as a busy woman with three kids and a lot going on, it was easier to go neutral because I knew that everything worked together. And now that I’ve started to reintroduce colour again, carefully. So that’s the kind of the evolution of my style in a colour sense.'
'Some of the things I love bout E.L.V. are, well, I love Anna. I think she’s an
incredible person and an incredible talent. And I think it's amazing what she’s achieved.
I love that it is sustainable, truly. I love that it’s made with care, with intention. It’s making use of every part of the garment and just looks so cool and fits so well. It’s not just ticking all of the sustainable boxes - it’s actually pieces that feel great and look great.'
'Well, there are a few things up next for me, but I am not in a position to share quite yet. But I’m really excited about some personal projects that will come to light. And that’s all I can say!'
